History
The History of Vocare (Diocese of Newark)
Why & how? Simply put, because there were no events or activities offered by the Diocese of Newark for young adults. There was a strong presence by a group of young adults who came up through the youth events offered by the Diocese of Newark. We were all left wanting something after our time in college. Several attempts were made to gather young adults to start some sort of program, but were unsuccessful. Rich Bardusch, (former Youth Ministries Director in the Diocese of Newark) came across a faith renewal retreat for young adults called Vocare. He sent several people to learn more about it. Upon their return, they came back with energy and passion to start Vocare here in the Diocese of Newark. Word got out about Vocare and interest began to build, so Rich sent several groups to experience and learn about Vocare in different Dioceses so we can bring the Vocare experience to the young adults here in the Diocese of Newark. After 6 years of traveling and planning, Vocare #1 finally came to fruition in the Diocese of Newark on January 16-18, 2004.
As we prepare to embark on Vocare #5, the Vocare community has been growing strong with young adults not only from the Diocese of Newark, but also from different Dioceses across the U.S. Vocare has also captured the hearts of many young adults from the NJ Synod of the ELCA. To date, our Vocare Community, Steering Committee and team are comprised of many young adults from the Episcopal Church and Lutheran Church, working together to continue the Vocare ministry.
